Triumph TR3 Specs

One engine family, one chassis and one body shape from 1955 to 1962, with disc brakes from 1956, a bigger engine from 1959 and the TR4's gearbox in 1962: the TR3's figures as the road tests, the clubs and the factory gave them, and where they differ.

From the first TR3 of October 1955 to the last TR3B of 1962, the sidescreen TR kept one chassis, one body shape, one wheelbase and one family of engines. What changed can be counted on one hand: front disc brakes from commission number TS13046 in September 1956, a new face in 1957, a bigger engine offered from 1959 and, in the TR3B of 1962, the TR4's gearbox (transmission) and, in most of those cars, its engine.

The tables below set the five kinds of car side by side: the TR3 with drum brakes and with discs, the TR3A, and the two series of the TR3B, TSF and TCF. Each figure is shown with the source that printed it. Where the sources differ, the table leads with one, and a small asterisk beside it opens every other figure with its source. The sources read hold no period road test of either TR3B series.source 1source 2source 3

The engine and its ratings

Every TR3 had a four-cylinder engine with wet cylinder liners, overhead valves worked by pushrods, three main bearings and twin SU carburettors; The Autocar summed up its origins in 1957:

the engine, which is essentially similar to the power unit of the Standard Vanguard, gives 100 b.h.p. at 5,000 r.p.m., 10 b.h.p. more than the output reached on the earlier cars at 4,800 r.p.m.

The Autocar, 11 January 1957

The power figures need care. In Britain Standard-Triumph first rated the engine below the figure its American company announced, and only the high-port head of 1956 made the two agree. Motor Sport's data panel of 1957 and Motor Trend's test of 1956 print the later rating at a lower engine speed than The Autocar, Sports Cars Illustrated, Motor Trend in 1957 and the TR Register do, and the table follows the majority. Only Car and Driver, in 1961, called the TR3's figure a gross rating, in comparing it with the TR4's net one; none of the British sources read says how it was measured.

The bigger engine of 1959, offered on the TR3A and fitted to the TCF cars, had a wider bore and a higher compression ratio. Standard-Triumph's own figure for the TCF cars was not found, so their column leads with the TR4 engine's net rating, with that engine's gross rating and Dwinger's rating of the TCF, in PS, behind the asterisk.source 4source 2source 5source 6source 7source 8source 9source 10source 11source 12source 1

Transmission

The gearbox had four speeds, with synchromesh on second, third and top, until the TR3B took the TR4's box with synchromesh on all four. The Laycock-de Normanville overdrive, an extra, acted on the top three gears, so the testers counted seven forward speeds. The ratios were these:

GearGearbox ratioOverall, with the 3.7 axleOverall, in overdrive
First3.3812.5–
Second2.007.46.07
Third1.3254.94.02
Top1.003.73.03
Reverse4.28––

The ratios are those of the American newsletter's table of 1958 and Dwinger's, which agree except in reverse, where the newsletter prints 4.35 and Sports Cars Illustrated 4.27; and Motor Sport's data panel printed the overall first gear as 12.1. The overdrive's own ratio was 0.82. A 3.7 to 1 axle was standard, and Motor Trend reported in 1957 that the 4.1 to 1 was "available with o.d. only", though Sports Cars Illustrated's TR3A of 1958 had the 4.11 axle and no overdrive. The American newsletter told owners how to tell them apart: green paint on the axle's cover plate for 3.7, green and white for 4.1. On the 3.7 axle The Autocar calculated 32 km/h (20 mph) for every 1,000 rpm in top, and 39 km/h (24.4 mph) in overdrive top. The clutch was a single dry plate, worked hydraulically.

The engine, as well as the gearing and other mechanical components, is identical to last year's Triumph engine, exactly — right down to the last bolt.

Chassis, steering, brakes and wheels

The body sat on a separate frame of channel-steel pressings with an X-shaped cross-member. At the front were wishbones of unequal length with coil springs and telescopic dampers (shock absorbers); at the back a live axle on half-elliptic leaf springs, with lever-arm dampers. A front anti-roll bar was not standard: in 1959 the American dealers sold one as a kit.

The drum-braked cars had Lockheed brakes all round. From TS13046 the front wheels had Girling discs, and from TS56377 the rear drums were smaller. Sports Cars Illustrated's data panel of 1958 lists the rear drums as "Girling or Lockheed", so which make later cars had at the back is not settled. The tyres, whose size the table gives, ran on pressed-steel disc wheels, with centre-lock wire wheels as an extra; The Autocar ran its test car at 1.5 bar (22 psi) front and 1.7 bar (24 psi) rear for normal driving, and 1.9 and 2.1 bar (28 and 30 psi) for fast work.source 7source 2source 4source 5source 15source 6source 16source 8source 17source 1source 18

Measurements and weights

The wheelbase and height are the same in every test and the width all but the same; the length is not. The Autocar's car, which had front overriders (bumper guards), Motor Trend's of 1957 and Sports Cars Illustrated's TR3A of 1958 measured longer than Motor Sport's hard-top and Sports Cars Illustrated's TR3 of 1957, and no source says why. The track was 1,143 mm (45 in) at the front and 1,156 mm (45½ in) at the back by the measurements of The Autocar, Motor Sport and the American tests; Car and Driver gave 1,143 mm at the back as well.

The fuel tank of the TR3 was smaller than the TR2's: the factory's workshop manual says it was reduced to make room for the occasional rear seat. Motor Sport's data panel of 1957 prints the TR2's capacity, and the table gives both.

No two weights in print are of the same car in the same state. Motor Sport weighed its hard-top with about 4.5 litres (an imperial gallon) of petrol (gas) and no one aboard; The Autocar weighed SKV 656, a hard-top with overdrive and wire wheels, with 23 litres (5 imperial gallons); Motor Trend weighed its 1956 car with fuel, oil and water; and the American tests of 1957 and 1958 do not all say what was in the car. The table gives the others' figures with their conditions, and none is averaged; Motor Trend's 1956 weight is on the TR3's page.source 4source 10source 5source 15source 6source 7source 12source 16

Performance, test by test

The comparison below gives 0–60 mph times and top speeds only for the disc-braked TR3 and the TR3A, each column's other figures behind the asterisk; Motor Trend's figures of 1956 and The Motor's, whose cars no source places before or after the discs, are on the TR3's page. The tests' other times and their fuel consumption are below. Each tester's car was different, in body, gearing and equipment, and so was the weather:

TestCar0–30 mph0–50 mph0–80 mphFuel consumption

The Motor, 4 April 1956 (unread), as Wikipedia reports itA hard-top with overdrive3.6 s7.5 s–27.1 mpg (imperial)

Motor Trend's 0–60 mph time of September 1957 is far quicker than any other test's, and no source explains it; it is shown as that magazine's figure for its car. Standard-Triumph's American advertisements of 1957 and 1958 claimed 50 mph from rest in 8 seconds, a top speed above any a tester timed, and "up to 35 miles per gallon". The speedometers flattered: The Autocar's read 60 mph at a true 92 km/h (57 mph), and Motor Sport's was 6 km/h (3.7 mph) fast at 60, though Sports Cars Illustrated found its 1957 car's "unusually accurate".
