Triumph TR3 Books and Sources

The road tests, the American owners' newsletter, the clubs' registers and the one book chapter behind every page of this site, what each gave and how far to trust it; and the workshop manuals.

Two kinds of source carry most of this site. Magazines in Britain and America reported the TR3 from the London show of October 1955, its first, and tested it while it was new; and from the TR3's American announcement in December 1955, the newsletter that Standard-Triumph's American company sent its owners' club followed the car issue by issue: what the company was selling, at what price, and how the works cars had done. Every source the pages cite is in the list below, with its address, where it has one, printed as plain text, and each page lists its own sources at its foot.source 1source 2

How the sources are graded

Beside each source in the list is a label for the kind of source it is, which is not a verdict on every line in it. Primary sources come from the time itself: the period road tests and show reports, the factory's manual and advertisements, and the American company's newsletter, written to sell cars but written as things happened. Reference sources are later work done with care, such as the clubs' guides and registers, a specialist's account of a car it owns, or a historian's book. Database sources, the race results above all, are read one entry at a time.

Unchecked sources are leads, such as Wikipedia, auction catalogues and web biographies that name no sources of their own. A page uses one beside a stronger source or with its name in the sentence; where a data panel has no better figure, as for the top speed of The Motor's test of 1956, the figure stands, and its source carries the Unchecked label in the page's list of sources.source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7source 8source 9

The factory's papers and workshop manuals

The factory's workshop manual was written for the TR2 and extended to the TR3 by a supplement; American owners could buy it, the handbook and the parts book through their club, and Bentley and Brooklands have reprinted it since. Its general data and steering sections have been read, and they explain, for instance, why the TR3 carried less fuel than the TR2. Standard-Triumph also speaks for itself in its American advertisements of 1957, 1958 and 1960, printed in Sports Cars Illustrated, which give the company's prices at the ports and its own claims for the car.

The factory's build records survive at the British Motor Museum, which issues Heritage Certificates from them for a car's commission number.source 10source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15source 16

The American newsletter

The Triumph Sports Owners Association Newsletter came from Standard-Triumph Motor Company Inc. in New York, the American company, from 1955 to 1981. The Vintage Triumph Register keeps scans of it, and 54 issues of 1956 to 1962 were read there. It is the best record of the TR3 in America: the prices and the dealers, the model years, the service notes, the owners' rallies in Europe and the works team's results as they were reported to owners. It is also partisan, and where it claims sales or standing, the pages say that the company claimed it.source 2source 17source 18source 19source 20

Period road tests

The pages draw on these tests, all but the last read in full:

TestCar
Sports Cars Illustrated, Karl Ludvigsen, March 1956One of the first American TR3s, a hard-top
Motor Trend, October 1956A stock TR3
The Autocar, Road Test No. 1622, 11 January 1957SKV 656, a disc-braked hard-top
Sports Cars Illustrated, Karl Ludvigsen, April 1957A disc-braked TR3
Motor Sport, July 1957Bill Boddy's hard-top, with overdrive
Motor Trend, Wayne Thoms, September 1957A standard TR3
Sports Cars Illustrated, Len Griffing, March 1958A TR3A, a TR-3 of the 1958 model year to its American sellers
The Motor, 4 April 1956A hard-top; known only through Wikipedia

Motor Sport also reported the launch, the London shows that followed, a visit to the works at Canley in 1957 and the races and rallies, and Car and Driver described the twin-cam engine and the TR4 in 1961. The TR Register's performance tables for the TR3 and the TR3A both repeat The Autocar's figures, all but its fuel consumption, so they are not a second witness to them. Road tests quotes the testers, and specifications sets their figures side by side.source 3source 21source 22source 13source 14source 23source 24source 8source 1source 25source 26source 27source 5

Books

The pages draw on one chapter of one book: "The Italian Job", the third chapter of G. William Krause's The Illustrated History of Triumph Sports and Racing Cars (CarTech, 2017), on the Italia, Michelotti's Dream Car and the twin-cam racers. Other books reach the pages at second hand. The Vintage Triumph Register's list of changes by commission number draws on Bill Piggott among others, and Wikipedia cites Piggott, Chris Harvey and David Knowles's book of 2016; where a page uses such a citation, it names both.source 28source 20source 8

Clubs and registers

ClubWhat it gives
TR Register (Britain)Production tables, basic prices and buyers' guides for the TR3 and the TR3A
Vintage Triumph Register (United States)Carl Musson's change list, Ken Streeter's spotter's guide and the newsletter archive
TR Drivers Club (Britain)The TR3B, Frank Marsden's account of the TR3 Beta, and articles on the Italia, the Devin and the Doretti
TR-Register DeutschlandBruno Dwinger's history and buyer's guide of 2008, read in German

Dwinger's guide has slips, which the pages point out where they matter: it gives two different months for the last TR3B. The TR Drivers Club's page on the early TR3 follows Wikipedia, so it is not counted as a source of its own.source 5source 29source 20source 30source 31source 32source 33
